Emergency Action Required:Contact Elected Officials.
To whom it may concern:
So far I believe Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s responsible supervision of the Covid-19 pandemic in New Mexico deserves kudos. She has exceeded other states and governors in her concern for the health, safety, and public welfare of New Mexicans.
Unfortunately, neither Texas nor Arizona has joined in recognizing the dangers of the pandemic. During the last two weeks I have seen the acceleration of visitors from out-of-state, particularly the number of Texas license plates and the unorthodox behavior of visitors—unmasked and non-social distancing— at convenience stores, gas stations, and in public on the Plaza. I believe the sky-rocketing rates of confirmed Covid-19 in our neighboring states require emergency action.
Just before the shut-down on March 13th, I witnessed irresponsible attitudes of said Texans at TSV just as I see it now with summer visitors. I support testing, quarantines, and/or a police presence at the state borders. I realize that friends and relatives, who own local businesses or work at them will suffer. But we in Taos County have seen the numbers of Covid-19 testing positive gradually increase. The lives you save may be our own.
As elected officials I urge you to take action immediately. This is no time for quibbling and letting the good will evaporate you have rightfully earned by allowing visitors to undermine the health of Taosenos and New Mexicans. We have no control over red-state fanatics, who believe neither in science nor in prudent behavior.
You have all taken an oath to protect the public safety and it’s time take to take action (again). Thank you for considering this emergency: Pronto.
Best,
Bill Whaley
