Dead Men Walking

Statesman Caveat:

Mr. Obama, now out of office, has grown in stature, perhaps in response to that “Angel” on his shoulder, John Lewis, the civil rights leader who marched across the Edmund  Pettus Bridge in Selma and got whacked in the head for causing “good trouble.” At Congressman Lewis’s funeral, former President Obama delivered the eulogy but turned that eulogy into a plea for folks to vote and listed all the ways the feds and the republicans are repressing the historic franchise from which American democracy derives its authority. 

It was the first time I heard him speak to specifics in a statesmanlike manner. Perhaps the example of Georgia peanut farmer Jimmy Carter, who also grew immensely after serving as president, as well as John Lewis, inspired Obama. 

Further, last night President Obama, like Michelle on the first night of the democratic convention, grew in stature, saying, “This president and those in power — those who benefit from keeping things the way they are — they are counting on your cynicism. They know they can’t win you over with their policies. So they’re hoping to make it as hard as possible for you to vote, and to convince you that your vote doesn’t matter. That’s how they win.”

 “Do not let them take away your power,” Mr. Obama said. “Do not let them take away your democracy.”

Editor’s Note: If you want to know who “they” are, you need look know further than the pols, the Senate, aka “Dead Men Walking,” bought and paid for in Washington by Corporate America’s lobbyists.” The Walking Dead refused to convict the criminal in the white house but they recently issued a report accusing (?) Trump of consorting with the enemy.

In an Aug. 19, 2020 New York Times piece, By Julian E. Barnes, he writes:

• “More than 200 pages into a sprawling,1,000-page report on Russian election interference, the Senate Intelligence Committee made a startling conclusion endorsed by both Republicans and Democrats: Donald J. Trump knew of and discussed stolen Democratic emails at critical points late in his 2016 presidential campaign.”

“Despite voting to endorse and release the reports, Republicans were reluctant to discuss it publicly. Aides to Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, the acting chairman of the committee, and Senator Richard M. Burr of North Carolina, his predecessor, who stepped down after the F.B.I. began investigating his stock trades, declined interview requests to discuss the issue on Wednesday.” Basically, the report confirms the Mueller document outlining traitorous conduct.

Voting Machines Junked

Due to the plague, Demos have encouraged their constituents to vote by mail. But the U.S. P.O., an American institution, started by founder Ben Franklin is being disemboweled. Trump has ordered his Postmaster General to slow down the mail and junk hundreds of “sorting machines” that can distribute thousands of pieces of mail an hour for delivery.  

So, as Michelle Obama has advised, we shall have to risk our lives, as have American soldiers and John Lewis, for democracy, by voting in person. In New Mexico we have it easy what with a generally well-organized county clerk and staff in Taos. But demos throughout the country should organize and educate a new generation of poll watchers and vote counters.

The Enemy Within

Given the arrival in Taos of the anti-maskers led by Texans, the local anti-vaxxers or long-time science deniers, the latest cults, who worship Qanon, sponsors of baby kidnapping and child sex conspiracies, we need to take note and pray for our neighbors. Also, light a candle for local republicans and their white supremacist sympathizers. 

Covid Spread

The Covid spread began in March with TSV visitors. Recently, anecdotal tracking focused on out-of-towners, both non-native visitors, and natives, who came home for graduation parties and funerals. As a result local family members have tested positive or been hospitalized, according to El Mitote, the only reliable news source, given local censorship. Buy more masks, gloves, and cheap hazmat suits. Vaccines may finally reduce but probably will not stop the spread. We shall be living apart for a long time.

The Future: Vote

As Michael Moore has pointed out there are more of us, demos, liberals, decent Americans, than those who would sleep with Fascists and make up stories. Michelle Obama made the point: “Vote as if your life depended on it.” 

If there is a future, we can see it in the persons of AOC, the squad, and Kamala Harris. Mussolini (170,000 dead) is in the White House. Can we stop him, the death squads and his suicide cult before he turns into Hitler (Six million dead) or Stalin (20 million dead).
