Letter
The letter below represents a settlement between two parties, the details of which will be explored in the future. Mr. Whaley said he will apologize to anyone anytime for bruised “feelings.” But he also said he reserves the right to report the facts and editorialize about alleged public servants, public figures, and public scofflaws. The judicial system itself is in great need of scrutiny, he said.
To the Editor of Taos Friction:
As the former editor and publisher of Horse Fly I apologize to anyone who was hurt by my comments. Especially I want to apologize to former magistrate judge Erminio Martinez.
I began the newspaper with the goal of being the voice of the people, those whose voices were not heard in the mainstream media. Horse Fly functioned as a publication free of entanglements or debts to the powers that be and could speak truth to power. As a monthly journal the publication was a bulletin for the people.
In the case of Erminio Martinez, I impetuously shot from the hip and posted an online editorial but failed to analyze statements or conclusions. For this I am deeply sorry.
A new day has emerged in the country and we are on a different path. A new dialogue has begun, a dialogue that includes respect, comity, humor, and a focus on the issues. Towards that end I wish to make amends to those whose feelings were hurt.
Peace,
Bill Whaley
