TaosMurals.Artists,DocumentaryThe Mayor and Town Council have declared Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, 2014 to be Hispanic Heritage month: See below.

“NOW BE IT RESOLVED, by the Mayor and Council of the Town of Taos that September 15th through October 15th shall heretofore be declared annually in the Town of Taos as Hispanic Heritage month in honor of the many contributions of our current and past residents, community leaders, artists and artisans, farmers and caretakers of our lands and water, teachers, healers, mothers and fathers, and families that have contributed so much of themselves every day to make this community and our State, rich in spirit, rich in culture, rich in history and rich in family, community and promise.”

Signed this 23rd day of September, 2014 by Mayor Barrone, Councilors Peralta, Cantu, Gonzales, and Hahn.

Taos_NM-1In celebration of Hispanic Heritage, Taos Fall Arts, Taos County, the Healy Foundation, and the FDR Administration are sponsoring an exhibit of historic WPA photos in the Old County Courthouse Mural Room, above, from Sept. 26 through Oct. 5. About 50 enlarged and framed classic black and white WPA photos, circa 1940-41 by Irving Rusinow, Russell Lee, and John Collier depict men, women and children in their daily life. The stunning portraits of people and place offer a timeless glimpse into a rural culture rooted in the villages and neighborhoods of Taos County.98px-Taos_County,_New_Mexico._Flumes,_carrying_irrigation_water_across_arroyos,_are_frequently_washed_ou_._._._-_NARA_-_521940 You just might see your neighbors or relatives in these photos of folks at prayer, cutting wood, in school, plastering, and gathering to hear the news of WWII on the Plaza.

(Town of Taos Press Release) THE KONGOS “KONGCERT” AND PARTY ON THE PLAZA

The exciting line-up for the big FREE Thursday event is ready to go and the word is out!

Starting at 4pm there will be live remote broadcasts of the event by KTAO-FM 101.9 for Taos and KBAC-FM 99.1 for Santa Fe, with event merchandise and hot ticket giveaways, including the tickets for upcoming Solar Center Events and the sold out Kings of Leon/Kongos concert Friday night at the Isleta Amphitheater.

Prior to the Platinum selling Kongos taking the stage, the audience will be treated to a rainbow of rich local talent that will include a performance by 2 time Grammy Award winners “Hail Creek” from the Taos Pueblo.

The extremely talented “Mariachi Teotihuacan” will delight audience members with beautiful and vibrant renditions of traditional Spanish and Northern New Mexican classics, interspersed with such humorous and farfetched blends as a mariachi version of Sponge Bob Square Pants.

Other musical surprises are also planned that will give partiers a sense of the multiculturalism and full range of Taos’ diversity, from classical, to rock, to Spanish troubadours, to Native American flash mobs.

Between musical acts, partiers will “oo’ed” and “ahhed” by the highly acrobatic, diverse and visually beautiful performances of the entertaining “Revolving Door Circus”.

Revelers will be visually delighted by a series of jungle-themed rooftop street art by “Promo Hobo”, an elevated interactive electronic art piece from “The Paseo” exhibition, crosswalks transformed into colorful imaginative art work and the trees on the plaza will be lit with the typical SolarFest flair of imaginative lighting and a digitally lit “rain tree”.

A variety of local food vendors will also be on-hand to serve the best of Taos’ fare and many local restaurants, taverns, hotels and music venues, both on and off the Plaza, will be promoting pre-event and after-party specials for those that want to stretch the Taos party experience into Friday for the town-wide street art and performance art of “The Paseo” and the Saturday multi-venue Fall Arts extravaganza.
