Taos Characters: Book Project and Politics

Paul O’Connor has photographed fifty “Taos Characters†in telling black and white portraits. Now, based on these images, he is producing a book, edited by Bill Whaley, formerly of Horse Fly. The photos will be reproduced as single-page images. Paul is asking friends to write and/or record anecdotes of 500 words or so about each character for the facing page. Whaley will edit the pieces and write a few of the stories, too. Nothing will be published without the consent of the “Character†and the author.
The anecdotes or vignettes should focus on the essence of personality and character with telling Taos stories, whether humorous, tragic, or melodramatic. We are hoping that friends will write about friends. For instance, Larry Bell and Ken Price will write about each other. Trudy Healy is writing a piece about Jim Wagner and Juan I. Valerio. We asked John Nichols to write up his own “eulogy.†Tony Huston is writing a bit on Agnes Martin.
We are open to suggestions.
Each writer will be given a book for his or her trouble. If we receive more than one submission per “Character,†we’ll do out best to accommodate the authors with some fancy editing. We are counting on the goodwill of long-time friends and acquaintances to help us immortalize these “Characters†for posterity.Somebody has to do it.
